If you read my review of UNREACHABLE by Katie leone you know the story of Andrew the boy who is troubled and about to wind up “in the system” in New York City You learned along with his teacher the narrator of the story that he has a problem with trust that as it turns out comes from a childhood of abandonment and ultimately from gender dysphoria Though born biologically a boy Andrew ‘s brain is female making him female too In the amazing story of his growth and acceptance you can see “Desiréd” blossom and become a whole childREACHING HOME takes up where UNREACHABLE left off Janice the teacher is adopting Desirée It is Christmas and Janice wants to take the girl home to Tennessee to meet her parents It’s a different world down there but her parents appear to be open to the little one as a girl They make their faux pas especially Janice’s father and trust is not something Desiréd can give It take a crisis to bring the old man and little girl together just as Janice is considering going home to the city earlyLeone handles the concerns of the young girl with immense sensitivity For the most part she delivers the parents’ concerns as well It is after all the first time Desirée has been able to present as her true self day and night It seems that the situation back in her elementary school is that she has to live as Andrew and only remove her cocoon at home The visit involves meeting a boy whom Desirée likes and kisses and lots of sticky situations with GrandpaThat is where I drew the line with this book There is a seuence where the grandfather tells the little girl that seeing all the mangers made him realize that other grandchildren know their grandparents from birth and that perhaps he should give her a bath and put her in diapers I cringed when I read this knowing that this was a typical sexual abuse scenario and that it was not only possible but likely that “Andrew” had experienced it I was surprised at Leone for using such an extreme situation in a book full of references as is usual with her books to religion and Bible stories It was just too extreme to accept If my grandfather had said something like that he would have been up on charges in no timeIn spite of this the rest of the book is sweet and thoughtful I wondered how readers would take the love interest being a little boy and the fact that no one ever suggests to Desirée that she might prefer another girl but that is down the road in this story and might not need to be addressed hereThis book will alternately make your guts tie up and warm your heart but then so does the subject of transgender children No one said it would be easy someday perhaps it will beThat's All I Read
