My Thoughts 4 out of 5 Unicorns I really liked itI have this book in ebook in a bundled boxed set and I won an audiobook copy through a multi author giveaway to get through Audible The cover is fierce and I like it I love a tough female lead who can kick butt and Emily definitely fits This story was awesome and I loved it Even my son loved the story Brett is amazing that he can handle the new things sprung on him and the things he must deal with dailyThis story is full of action and excitement and a cameo appearance from Shane which my son loved because he gets upset when a book series doesn’t keep to the same characters each book makes me laugh a little when he finds out the characters are differentI definitely did not like that there was a new narrator for this book and the narrator is one I have no problem not listening to again This narrator reminds me of the Clear Eyes commercial and the teacher from Ferris Bueller’s Day off You guessed it very monotone and no change in voice for any of the charactersI definitely recommend the story to everyone who enjoyed book 1 and to those YA book lovers who love VampireHunter books with all sorts of battles and action

A novella length story Rival was my introduction to the Unholy Alliance series by Lucy Yager and it was a fun and cleverly written book from a perspective not often seen in vampire stories Emily is a teenaged girl from a family of vampire chasers although her widowed mother is not at all willing to discuss her fighting vampires Add to that her rather protective family none of whom believe that she is strong enough or well enough trained to hunt vampires All of that is for naught as this book encompasses the last week before she turns 18 in her mind to leave her home and go on the road as a chaser with or without her family’s approval Trained in martial arts as well as having her late father’s stockpile of weaponry she is much a fighter than a glamour girl even though one boy finds her irresistible Brett has been a friend and sparring partner for Emily at the dojo until she believes he let her win a match Not sharing his own deep secret with anyone Brett has hidden an illness that often effects his physical movement When he runs into Emily at the mall with her cousin trying on dresses for her upcoming debut dance he sees her in a whole new light always attracted to her for her attitude and spunk he sees her as a girl Told in alternating points of view readers are able to get a sense for both characters their concerns thoughts and even their uestions are brought forward and easy to understand creating a connection as the issues are common enough despite the addition of vampires Emily and Brett both need to trust in one another although their relationship is just starting there are plenty of new ideas to grasp brought forward from both sides and the dangers are increasing each day With the final climax resulting in a vampire attack and help from unexpected places the two join forces as assumptions and options are brought forward Characters are true to both their ages and personalities with strong voices and a palpable attraction that starts the romance with a sweet build Perfect for teen and YA readers alike there are characters who are easy to connect with and understand and the action and pacing keep the pages turning A side story to explain one major character absence in the Unholy Alliance series this story ties into those perfectly well while providing readers a taste of the author’s style and story to see if would be of interest I received an eBook copy from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review I was not compensated for this review all conclusions are my own responsibility

Super short kick butt chick likes a kick butt guy with arthritis not shabby over all Short n sweet but if she said I just gotta be a chaser or something to that affect one time I was tempted to put it down it got a tad annoying I did like though that she did not rely on the guy

375 starsYou do not need to read Alliance to read this novella but Shane does make an appearanceThis is a uick novella about a Chaser named Emily and Brent her ex friend I loved how Brent loved Emily and he even tried to give her up when he felt she didn’t want him but he just couldn’t and it was so cute Emily was annoying at some points but she is 18 years old so it’s understandableI want not Shane and Maggie I need Shane and Maggie

Rival is the second book in the Unholy Alliance series a uick novella length read We meet some new characters this time Emily Brett and Erick I love Emily as a YA character She is a tough girl and not afraid to get in the middle of the fray to do what is right She is determined to prove herself and follow in her father's footsteps even though it is a constant struggle with her mother Brett and Emily are really the focus of the book and not just because of their romance The romance was great however I love the fact that it was the guy that had the unreuited feelings instead of the usual girl There are some interesting dynamics between them secrets that make a difference But there is than the romance between them Their characters are euals fully supportive of one another Brett accepts Emily for who and what she is without trying to change her She learns his secret and doesn't judge for him but admires him I love the message that sendsThings to love Brett and Emily Their friendship their romance their acceptance of one anotherThings I wanted less of More Erick His story line had the potential to be big and it was essentially left completely unresolved I want to know what happened to himSome uotastic Goodness I'm too flat up top too tall and too skinny to pull off any of these formal gowns On the other hand the gowns with strapless or spaghetti straps show off my biceps nicely Too bad I can't have a kama—a traditional Filipino weapon looks like a scythe— as an accessory Loc 2529 We aren't friends now and never will be if I have anything to say about it I don't hang with uitters Loc 2573 But I’m the one who’s instantly caught up in the heat of his mouth against mine He takes advantage angling his head and using one thumb to guide my chin down just so— and the sensation intensifies Loc 2786 My Recommendation This novella sets the stage for in the series and I am looking forward to it allThis review originally appeared on my blog

Rival is the second book in the Unholy Alliance series by Lacy Yager This young to new adult novel is about a fifth generation vampire Chaser seventeen year old Emily Santos wants nothing than to join the family business But Emily's mother refuses so Emily must channel her aggression into her martial arts training at least until her eighteenth birthday Black belt senior Brett Carson has decided it's time to rid himself of his unreuited feelings for Emily But when he finds himself in the middle of an altercation with Emily and a gang of vampires he is drawn into a world he never expected And Brett is hiding his own secretI have not read Unholy Alliance the first book in the series I am glad to say that while there is some connection between the two I do not feel like I enjoyed Rival any less for that lack Emily is a smart and strong teen that would rather be off riding four wheelers in the mud with her cousin sparing at the gym or even hunting vampires than getting ready for a catilion Brett is a fellow martial artist with a crush on Emily and a secret he thinks will make her view him as weak Coinidence and vampire attackes make thier relationship even complicated and might be just what they need to see each other as they really are I liked that Emily is strong not just mentally but physically as well and that she want take part in a dangerous proffesion she is not reckless Brett is dealing with his own issues and while he has feelings for Emily he is aware of hoe unobtainable she was and was not being the dopey suiter you sometimes see in this sort of book He is aware of himself and his ewmotions and how the effect those around him I enjoyed Rival and while I do not know if I will go back and read the first book but I know i will keep an eye out for future books by Yager this is not typical vampire fiction in faction the vampires in this book are not actual characters only a source of danger and violence which is not true in Unholy Alliance according to the description

“I’m the only one who can carry on the legacySomeone has to step up and protect the humans”—EmilyBeing a Chaser a vampire hunter is Emily’s legacy and she has every intention of following through Just don’t tell that to her mom But Emily’s almost eighteen and she’s so close to reaching her goals She just needs to win the freestyle martial arts tournament convince her uncle she can be a Chaser not die of embarrassment at her own cotillion not actually die when vampires seem to be popping up everywhere and not fall for Brett—the normal guy who could possibly be in love with her“I’ve been waiting for you”—BrettThis is a sweet PG romance book with an interesting paranormal world You can definitely tell the love of fighting that the author has as there are plenty of action scenes throughout as Emily tries to figure out her path in life She’s got the killer goal she’s been working on the girly girl lifestyle her mom wants her to live and the hunky guy that she couldn’t possibly drag into her dangerous future Since Brett has been hopelessly in love with her—and she doesn’t know it—and is finally ready to sink or swim we’ve got a great teen romance with action and paranormal baddiesIt took me a while to warm up to Emily and I was sure I wouldn’t like Brett after reading her viewpoint But then we get Brett’s viewpoint and it was insta love for me well for Brett at least I wanted him to get the girl just as much as I wanted her to find her place in following her dreams of protecting humans I love that the tagline for this book is “Love at First Fight” because it’s totally true and these two make a great teamThe novella is clearly that—it’s a fast read and not as fleshed out as you’d expect a novel to be However we do get to know the characters well and we get a taste of the world There are many unanswered uestions so this definitely reads as being part of a series Overall this is a 45 out of 5 for meOriginally posted on my blog; I received a Netgalley copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review
