An overlooked almost classic of mid '90s contemporary fiction So overlooked that there's not even a picture of the bright sploogey neon cover here

Amiable shaggy dog story that captures the essence of lazy hot summer afternoons in Ohio Add a pinch of sardonic gen x slacker humor and stir gently

I can honestly say this is the worst book I've ever read I'm actually a little embarrassed at my 20 something self for buying this book back in the mid 90's from the dollar bin at Half Price Books I'm also embarrassed for the person at St Martin's Press who ok ed this book for publication Pretty sure that guy left the publishing industry soon after or likely was told to leaveMy mind is still somewhat numb from reading this book I'm still a little shocked at just how bad this novel is It's a simple story young guy spends a lost summer pining for the love of his life while dealing with all the just as lost people in his life as they donothing There's nothing wrong with the premise if the people are interesting or if there is some insight to be shared with the reader but unfortunately the characters are all alike and not even two dimensional and the only insight shared is that sex is really great when you are hot for someone and jerk cops are asses But the reader does get a front row seat to an endless list of really cool books to read and music to listen to circa early 1980's PleaseEvery characters in the story has a maturity level of a high school drop out It seems in Ridgway's perfect world everyone has a potty mouth and loves to use crude sexual language in every conversation they have Girls talk and act like sophmoric guys and are just as horny as all the guys Bud the main character manages to have great sex with the perfect love of his life every few chapters but only manages to have a somewhat real conversation with her in the last two pages of the book The reader gets two chapters on a farting competition that might have sounded funny when Ridgway thought this up with his real life buddies after a few beers but fails to translate this comedic gold mine into something remotely humorous in textAnd on And on For 184 pages Done Glad to be done This will be a good day because I know I'll never have to accidentally read this book again in my life

I also read the book a gift from the author Rick is a personal friend of mine so I give this one all I've got to give Hilarious and touching I once had a girlfriend kind of like Bud's and I was so screwed up I made a mess of it Not my fault really but too bad just the same Because Rick was friends with Pauline Kael we're all movie freaks she got it a major review in The New Yorker Maybe she did the review but I don't recall Rick was reading Cormac McCarthy back before I'd even heard of CM He has another book coming out soon Ablaze Date read is a guess
