This book was wonderfully weird I’d say it was my first real dive into modern surreal fiction It read very much like a dream and at first I couldn’t figure out why Then I realized it was because the four protagonists weren’t uestioning the events unfolding around them just reacting to them Except of course when they DID uestion such as wondering why the temperature didn’t seem to change as if there wasn’t a temperature at all One of the best parts of the book was that it was also ambiguously a science fiction novel I kept finding myself reading it like some extremely distant future even post humanish tale Perhaps that the bridge was a scrapyard for world simulations or something It’s possible I would read MOST surreal novels this way however It could be a personal biasThe plot started out as a uest across “the Bridge” to waystation 65 where one of the characters’ “lost love” awaited It seemed like a thin excuse for a group of friends to be traveling to begin with but it had me reading just to find out the real reason Each waystation to me read as an isolated place with its own set of rules; an island The narrative reminded me of how a child writes bringing to mind the likes of “Axe Cop”I loved the adversary in the book the “Suits” These were all apparently soulless people perpetually wearing suits and working for a large mysterious organization Like stormtroopers they were usually incompetent mooks but it was clear early on that there was some sort of evil behind them The anti brainwashing message came across pretty strong in this novel even a bit TOO strong in my opinionAll that said I do think it had its flaws To me it fell apart a bit at the end It’s not that I minded the self referential direction it took just how it was handled I was just left a little unsatisfied about the twist I would have rather it elaborated or left it out altogether
